Model Types

SVOD — Subscription

Subscription-based access. Users must subscribe and pay a recurring fee to access content. This is the most common model for platforms offering a library of content.

Best for: Platforms with a large content library where customers pay monthly or yearly for access.

TVOD — Transactional

Transactional video on demand. Viewers must purchase or rent individual content titles. Each transaction gives access to a specific piece of content for a defined period (rental) or permanently (purchase).

Best for: Platforms offering premium content for one-time purchase or short-term rental.

AVOD — Ad-Supported

Ad-supported video on demand. Viewers watch content for free, with advertisements shown before or during playback. No payment or subscription is required.

Best for: Platforms that monetize through advertising rather than direct customer payments.

TVE — TV Everywhere

TV Everywhere access. Customers log in using credentials from a participating pay-TV provider (cable, satellite, or IPTV). Access is granted based on the customer's TV subscription.

Best for: Platforms partnered with pay-TV providers to extend content access across devices.

FREE — Free for All

Completely free access. No login, subscription, or payment is required. Viewers can watch content at no cost.

Best for: Promotional content, trailers, or platforms that use free content as a funnel to paid tiers.

PPV — Pay-Per-View

Pay-per-view access. Customers pay for one-time or time-limited access to specific content — typically live events or premium broadcasts.

Best for: Live events, sports broadcasts, or exclusive premieres with limited availability.

SVOD+TVOD — Subscription + Transactional

Hybrid model combining subscription and transactional access. Customers can subscribe for general library access while also purchasing or renting premium titles that are not included in the subscription.

Best for: Platforms with a subscription tier that also offer premium content for separate purchase.

SVOD+PPV — Subscription + Pay-Per-View

Hybrid model combining subscription and pay-per-view access. Customers subscribe for regular content access and can optionally pay for premium or live events on top of their subscription.

Best for: Platforms with a subscription base that also host live events or premium broadcasts requiring separate payment.
